Exclusive Life Insurance Leads—Myth or Reality?

We often hear from agents who are looking for "exclusive" life insurance leads—leads that are sent only to them and not any other carriers or agents. Some lead providers do offer exclusive life insurance leads or semi-exclusive life insurance leads, but these leads generally cost double or triple what a standard life insurance lead costs and it's unlikely that you'll see any more value out of them.

Exclusive Life Insurance Leads—Not Worth the Hype

While it may seem that an exclusive life insurance lead provider who offers exclusive life insurance leads or semi-exclusive life insurance leads can provide you with a higher close rate than shared leads, the reality is that a consumer, when presented with only one option, is simply going to seek additional options against which to compare the rate that you've presented them.

You may have paid a large sum to be the only insurance provider to get an exclusive life insurance lead. But if that consumer is like most online consumers and wants to compare price options, they will likely go to another site to compare multiple quotes.

In many cases, a life insurance lead provider may, for a given consumer, only have one agent available in its network. In that case, rather than sell that lead once at the standard price, the lead provider will call it an "exclusive life insurance lead" and sell the same lead at two or three times the price.

Exclusive Life Insurance Leads = Poor Consumer Experience

Exclusive life insurance leads make for a bad consumer experience because the consumer has received only one option when he or she was expecting to get multiple quotes to compare—and you've paid a bundle for an exclusive life insurance lead that isn't really exclusive.

Almost every lead provider out there attracts consumers to its site or network of sites with the promise of providing an easy way to get comparison insurance quotes. Exclusive life insurance leads limit the effectiveness of that site by displaying only one agent's contact information to the consumer.

Shopping for insurance used to be a tedious process whereby a consumer had to answer the same set of questions multiple times over the phone or in person. Now, as it has with almost every other industry, the Internet has changed the way consumers shop for insurance. But that doesn't mean that consumers don't still want to kick the tires on a few different options before picking which policy is right for them.
